All convicted gang murderers in Sweden in 2022 were of immigrant origin

People of immigrant stock were 7 times as likely to be convicted of murder in Sweden.

Sweden has long been admired as a center-left utopia.

But, despite strong gun control, it has in recent decades developed a problem with gangs and gang murders relative to its European peers. How come?

Using court records and official registers, Bulletin has investigated all homicide convictions in Sweden in 2022. Out of total 60 convicted for homicide, nearly two-thirds had either first- or second-generation immigrant backgrounds. All 18 individuals convicted for gang-related murders had foreign backgrounds from the middle east or Africa.

In recent years, Sweden has experienced a wave of gang violence, fatal shootings, and bombings unparalleled in Europe. Despite this escalation, authorities and media have struggled to provide comprehensive explanations for the trend.

The picture presented in the media is that the increase in gang violence in Sweden is a difficult-to-understand and complex phenomenon, linked to socioeconomic factors or social policy.

But, nah, it’s immigration.

Their study looked at the ethnic origins of all 60 killers convicted of murder in Sweden in 2022:

Overall, there were 18 gang-related murderers and 42 miscellaneous murderers (drunken brawls, family disputes, mental breakdowns) for a total of 60 murder convictions in 2022.

• Zero of the 18 gang murderers were ethnic Swedes, 0%.

• 18 of the 42 miscellaneous murderers, 43%, were ethnic Swedes.

• All 18 gang murderers were immigrants or of immigrant stock, 100%.

• 24 of the 42 miscellaneous murderers were of immigrant background, 57%.

Overall, ethnic Swedes made up 30% of the 60 convicted murderers and non-Swedes made up 70%.

It’s a little hard to find estimates for the ethnic breakdown of Swedish residents, but I see figures like 20% born abroad and 25% of immigrant stock. Of course, the younger population is getting less ethnically Swedish. (But, some of those immigrants are from less feisty places like Finland, Denmark, and Poland.)

Overall in Sweden, those of immigrant background were seven times as likely to be convicted of murder in 2022 as ethnic Swedes.
