Big difference between now and then (aside from the great recession not having taken place) is that the millennial cohort largely had not yet entered the workforce. Attitudes towards immigration have been shaped in large part by millennial and gen z downward mobility. Also they just let in too damn many people and made it impolite to require assimilation.
My experience of the current cohort of white people under age 30 is 1) they really do not want to grow up; 2) they are deathly afraid of offending any official victim-group: immigrants, alphabet people, joggers, etc.; and 3) they embrace the anti-colonialist narrative. OTOH, I completely flipped politically from angry social democrat to grumpy libertarian around age 35 and then to grumpy authoritarian by age 40, so perhaps they will as well.
What they are mainly doing is not having kids, and this is the same globally. Humanity is undergoing a massive cull.
But somebody is out there still having white kids and about 40% of them voted for Trump so I wonder if there's a counter-trend: Lefty whites are getting more loony lefty and going extinct, and Righty whites are getting more reactionary and having the necessary 2+ kids to show up for the future.
There's also the other unexpected trend that our host has observed: hispanics actually LIKE having charismatic dictators cracking troublemakers' heads. So maybe we end up with a fiscally liberal/socially conservative El Presidente who breaks with American tradition and wears a tri-color sash (reverently placed by the Chief Justice of the US Supreme Court, the Hon. Alexander Duval Guillermo-Martinez Smith).
We sound similar. I went from thinking that caring about politics made you LAME, to a libertarian, to supporting literally anything that makes it stop. Grumpy authoritarians unite!

Cathy Hughes began by buying up Washington radio stations circa 1980 and branched out nationwide. Her company, Radio One, owned 70 stations nationwide at one time and she and her son are minority owners of Black Entertainment Television. Cathy Hughes is listed as worth $450 million today making her the second wealthiest black woman in America next to Oprah Winfrey. I only knew of her because the man who did many of my deliveries, Ken H, was Cathy Hughes' primary deliveryman.

These riots and the earlier BLM riots are kinetic expressions of the new anti-colonialist narrative that has replaced the post-WW2 Atlanticist narrative. And this party is just getting started.
But would old school Chicanos really care that much about illegals? I don’t know LA, but Rasmussen’s recent polling shows Hispanics in general still behind Trump. What would make LA’s Chicanos, with their presumably deeper roots, more restive now?
If a peaceful massive protest didn’t give illegals amnesty, then violent resistance to any deportation is the answer. It’s the next best thing. Wait until all those illegals Biden let in start having their kids grow up. Even greater demand to give their parents and family citizenship. There are at least 30+ milllions illegals at this point.
