They Aren't Making Far Right Hate Groups Like They Used To

A new White Supremacist terror tactic has dropped: niceness.

As I pointed out yesterday, the SPLC promotes itself chiefly as opposing rightwing extremist “hate groups.” It posts a much publicized “Hate Map” so you can look up all the dangerous hate groups in your state, such as Santa Barbara’s Californians for Population Stabilization, long-led by UCLA astronomy professor Ben Zuckerman.

And it uses as persuasive examples the horrific mass shootings carried out by right wing extremists in this century, few in number but horrific, like Dylann Roof shooting up that black church, the massacre at a Pittsburgh synagogue, and the mass murder of Mexicans at an El Paso Walmart.

Those were bad, really bad.

So, who wouldn’t want the SPLC to infiltrate the hate groups where all these conspiracies are hatched and carefully plotted out by shadowy militia organizers and thus prevent these atrocities?

Except … virtually every notable 21st Century mass slaughter by a right wing extremist was carried out not by a hate group like in the old days, such as the four KKK bombers who blew up a Birmingham church killing four black girls in 1963, which was 63 years ago, but by a lone nut.

For fundraising purposes, the SPLC doesn’t much want to talk about how its “hate group” focus is outmoded.

But, simultaneously, for policy purposes, it’s aware that the main dangers come from isolated wackos who only know people on the Internet. So, the SPLC also argues that therefore it, and its friends, must be given effective censorship over the global internet to prevent lone nuts from reading facts about immigration, the environment, population, crime rates, test scores, DNA, and so forth.

But that’s seems a little extreme, no? Is it really worth handing over to an unelected NGO world domination of the Web on a promise to prevent idiosyncratic nuts from shooting up some place a few times per decade?

So, it’s back to the Hate Group Menace.

But, one problem for the SPLC is that they aren’t making white supremacist hate groups like they use to. From …
