I lived through the Rodney King riots. Was a student at USC and they shut down the school and asked everyone to head to Doheny Library where they shut the big iron doors for the evening. I drove home to the west side with fires blazing everywhere.
Helicopter gun ships - Apaches - circled my graduation several days later. The city was in ruins. It was orchestrated by the radicals who always burn down the most impoverished areas and then blame it on racism. George Floyd was the same way and I told friends it would end the same way and they called me racist. It didn't help that Trump didn't respond effectively.
Not this time. Not this year. This time, justice will be done.
The calling out of the !ational Guard or ordering up the Marines from Pendleton is the correct response to the leftist orchestrators and perpetrators of the riots. If Trump had done that with impunity during the criminal George Floyd's equally orchestrated riots the election results would have been different. Arrest. Deport. Repeat.
In a comment on your stack some time ago, I said three problems we will face will be chaos on the southern border, chaos on the northern border (Canada's economy is getting pretty grim), and leftist paramilitary violence.
I think this is a taste of the US's sectarian future. We will end up more like Lebanon than Brazil. Cheers!
I don't think the US founding mythology--the Protestant Christian, Anglo-American "City on a Hill"--survives past 2035. The first majority non-white generation was born all the way back in 2011; the US founding mythos isn't even being taught any more. Who's going to say, "Remember the Alamo!" to their 60% Latino classroom?
The future "founding" mythology is anti-colonialism, which is why every secular public event in North America has to be accompanied by the ritual invocation that white people don't actually belong here. This is truly nuts.
Who's left to carry the flag for the American Founding at that point? Even conservative Republican Evangelicals and Mormons have to throw in the towel at that point. The "founding mythology" going forward becomes survival of the Evangelical or Mormon tribe. Same for the Amish, the Jews, everybody. America as a shared mythology ceases to exist.
It's exciting to live in such momentous times but I wish I were 10 - 20 years younger. At least I have plenty of guns and can go down fighting.
Part of the “city on a hill” myth was the liberal assumption that peoples of the world, once shown the our liberal virtues and way of governance, would be transformed and inspired.
We tested the premise, got rid of all the skeptics, fully bought into blank slatism and experimented with the transformative power of liberal democracy in erasing prejudices and accidents of birth.
Turns out it was all based on a lie, and we will not be returning to that particular myth for a while until history forgets.
Lebanon had Syria on its border that wanted Lebanon to become the Lebanon it is today. Brazil is different - when conditions there deteriorated enough, military stepped in. With USA, it could become what would have become of South Africa without the pressure from the West - a core competent country intespersed with failed Bantustans.
Lebanon would be a unitary nationalist State but for Syria?
Hilariously, now Syria has blown up along sectarian lines. They are trying to unite behind the guy who just got fitted for a business suit by CIA and MIT last month but I'm not optimistic.
Without Syria, Lebanon might have been safely divided into mini-states: one for the Maronites, one for the Druse, one for the Shiites and one for the Sunnites plus Fakestinians. Unless, that is Shiites wanted to join the Sunnites and the Fakestinians.
The chaos on the southern border has disappeared because we actually started enforcing the border, so I was wrong there.
The Canadian economy is headed down a funnel of inflation, government grift, and organized crime, so for now I will stand by my prediction that the Canadian border will become increasingly chaotic. But maybe not.
There is a lot going on in the Canadian economy that you might be buffered from. At some point the only growth industries are government and criminal black markets. Maybe your new banker prime minister can turn things around but I doubt it.
i think any of the normal MAGA idiots whining (as they do) don’t grasp what free speech even is, much less the legal details. they’ll rage, feel better and innocent people will be jailed for.. being mad?
I'd not let cop beaters off like they did in Seattle and Portland. I didn't follow it WRT Jan 6. Which cop beaters? Did they serve any time? I think hitting a cop at a protest deserves jail time but not, for example 20 years.
"Habeas corpus" has been doing a lot of work for years. "Habeas corpus" means, does the respondent have a valid reason for holding you? It doesn't mean you get to relitigate your first-degree murder conviction in Coweta County, Georgia from ten years ago.
Same for immigration. To be here, you have to have an unexpired visa, a green card, or citizenship. Don't have it? Then your claim goes back to the Executive to determine what to do with you.
100%. I don’t know how the left got habeas corpus to mean illegal aliens get unlimited bites at the apple. As I heard someone say, it ain’t over until the migrant wins.
Habeas corpus means the illegal had an opportunity to demonstrate to the government that he does or does not have a valid visa for their presence in the U.S. it doesn’t mean they don’t have a valid visa but get to go before the federal courts for years and years hoping for a sympathetic judge to grant them citizenship and the American people have to pay for this nonsense. Next to birthright citizenship, this is one of the huge loopholes we must fix.
I noticed foreign flags. They've learned nothing since Prop 187.
Was it Chief Gates who pulled back and let it escalate in '92? I read they'd done the same thing in the '65 Watts riots, with equally bad effects. People get the leaders they deserve, or as bad as they'll put up with, I guess.
Lots of foreign flags but especially Mexican ones. Also saw a video where an American flag was being burned. Keep on burning the American flag with a foreign flag on your back
Vile people have pushed and propagandized this toxic minoritarian ideology. Essentially that a nation's normal, productive majority are serfs. Not entitled to govern themselves, to assert their norms as public norms, not entitled to maintain the nation for their benefit and turn it over to their children. Rather serfs who exist to provide goodies for others to enjoy and can not say "no". It is the ideology of the rapist, the parasite.
We need to end the "nice guy" equivocating and confusion and shine the bright shining light of clarity upon this truth. America is not "a nation of immigrants". It is a "nation of Americans" and properly belongs to the Americans who built it. Governed and ordered as we desire, maintained as we wish and passed on to our children. America belongs and must be governed for "ourselves and our posterity".
People who do not get that need to be given the bum's rush.
Ancestry. com and the like ruined the concept of being "American". Everyone got so hyped up and excited about being 8% this or that... that it really ruined this country. Just my opinion :)
Not too long before he passed, Saul Bellow published a compilation of things he'd written over his career. He edited the collection himself, entitled, "It All Adds Up." One section of the collection is about his childhood in Chicago. He said those elementary school teachers with classes of immigrant children from all over the planet were fixed, focused, devoted and dedicated to making sure every child knew they were now Americans and that it was their responsibility to learn English, speak it well, and become good citizens in the only country on earth where a man's home is his castle and that man is just as good and worthwhile a man as any king who ever lived. Chicago then dam'sho ain't Chicago now.
When 'asylum seekers' flooded NYC and Chicago, I saw people, blacks included, showing up to town halls to air their grievances about the situation. I don't recall any riots.
It's easy to tell who the good guys are.
A local news report said of the situation today that Trump claims he's protecting Americans and defending the boarder while others say this is madness not justice.
Can't help but feel the second part of that sentence deserves the ole 'he said without evidence' treatment
If anybody in the world can be an American then border enforcement is QED arbitrary and unjust. The most American American is the American who hasn't got here yet.
Turkmenistan still does skeuomorphic architecture. They have an airport shaped like a bird, a dental center shaped like a tooth, a hospital shaped like a Caduceus, a library shaped like a book, etc. They also do fun things in Ashgabat like streets where every apartment building has exactly 7 stories or every lamp post is slightly different or giant rotating statues. They know how to make poverty-stricken totalitarianism look fun.
This comment will sound very rude but I watched a video of a Turkmenistan street scene - people watching via YouTube - and I was surprised at how, well, ugly everyone was. Apparently 80% of Turkmenistan is composed of the Turkmen people (should I be surprised?) I'd guess that they're a tough, hardy people, but boy, not a lot of lookers. I wonder if they find each other attractive? Maybe I'm just not attuned to what passes for beauty among the Turkmen.
Turkmenistan's fertility rate is no further below replacement than are most countries similar to it, so I'd say the Turkmen must look good to each other. Which, yes, is all that matters.
My dog is from Turkmenistan. One day while walking him, an Uber driver stopped to admire him and say how surprised he was to see such a dog in the Valley. He was from Turkmenistan and his family bred them back there. He won some kind of immigration lottery to be the only Turkmen in America (or something). Later my cousins went there and reported that it is crazy land, like a junior North Korea. They took a picture of a golden statue of my dog (breed) and told me how they play a form of polo with a dead goat.
Definitely the most colorful dictatorship in the world. The golden dog is based on a beloved pet of some dictator, and flashing lights illuminate it. I hope they didn't miss the Ashgabat horse statues.
Who are these people who insist on living in the land of structural racism and white supremacy?
This stuff just highlights the fundamental moral pathology of minoritarianism.
If you are actually oppressed, you want to get the hell away from your oppressor and strive to live where you and your people can live and govern themselves as they wish. Not so the minoritarian. Their complaint is "let me in!" (A country club, a university, a neighborhood, a nation.) But then when in, their complaint is quickly morphs to you're oppressing me with your "boring", "white bread" norms. Whitey can not just live as we wish, but must change our norms to accommodate "diversity". Then, if we--very decently--pack up, move and seek to live according to our white bread norms somewhere else ... that's "white flight", racism. And the minoritarian quickly follows demanding to be let in and then the accommodation of "diversity".
Decency--really the only path of peaceful co-existence--is "Hey we have different cultures, different approaches to life. You stay over there and do your thing to your liking over there. We'll stay over here and live as we like over here." But the minoritarian hates that. Whitey must not be allowed to do, have or enjoy anything for themselves. Wherever they may be, whatever they have built, whatever they have, whitey must "let me in". It is rapist morality.
The Mexicans aren't, by and large, complaining about Whitey except for Whitey kicking them out. In my experience they look up to us. Culturally they are prepped to work for a boss and seem happy and confident with whites up top. I was once in a body shop and heard a guy with a mexican accent giving advice to an underling who had just been promoted. He ended the advice with "...a white man told me that once." said to add authority to the advice.
I would rather dodge wildfires, floods and coyotes than La Raza and Antifa.
No one in LA will even notice or care, LA is not a real place, it is mostly Asian students, Mexican maids and gardeners and transient actors, addicts and realtors.
Also, you're crazy if you think the cops can save you here, psychos outnumber cops 10 to 1.
"Nothing is true, everything is permitted" is the LA slogan.
This ensures that crappy neighborhoods stay crappy. The culture of patronage and corruption and greedy unions own that town, and the lowly indios who do the real work for cash are never going to insist on proper governance.
BBC News reports on it. They call the events "clashes", presumably because it's the blandest word they can think of. They quote tough guy language from the Trump people ("Check out these douchebags"). Then comments from immigrants rights groups, quoted statements with soaring rhetoric like "These are our daughters they're taking, these are our mothers they're taking" and so on. Various conflicting quotes from ICE, Bass, Newsom, the LAPD etc, whose wildly different interpretations make it seem like they live in separate realities. Overall it sounds like a mess.
The BBC describes this as “defiance”, “anger”, “protest”. But they reported the defiant angry protests in Southport (UK) as organised racist violence. Hmm.
All I know is... this is the stuff that is making our personal home real estate soar. We bought a too large home twenty years ago outside of Annapolis. Over the years, the homes languished on the resale market; when they finally sold it was well below asking. Say hello to BLM and defund the police in 2020! Because our large homes are tucked away from the goons and provide a lot of space... they now fly off the market within days and well over asking price.
I'm 65 and a "Boomer." I wonder when we Boomers die off at a greater pace whether home prices might eventually decline with all the houses of the dead on the market. After all, you can't take your house with you.
I'm 58. I'm pretty sure this was already to have been predicted to happen... but hasn't. I do think the economy/job market is about to undergo radical shifting with so many losing theirs jobs to AI that it's hard to say how the housing situation will go.
One of my best friends at church is 55 and does code. I think he's sweating AI right now. He's also at the vulnerable age that IT companies like to axe their aging workers.
My oldest is graduating from Hopkins next year; nearly all A's double majoring in applied math and economics. In the "old days" his future would have been guaranteed and golden. Not anymore. And I just hate it.
Here in SE PA, subcons are buying up all the houses. Entire developments are now Indian or Pakistani, The real estate signs are exclusively in Hindi. Toll Bros.isn’t worried in the least.
Loudoun County VA is where Indians choose to live in the Washington DC metro area. Loudoun used to be strongly Republican. Not anymore. Loudoun favors Democrats now.
How about instead of an inflammatory response, creating an effective response to the underlying issues. Trump is agonna change things; really? he’s just changed the TV channel from fake Marxist BS to fake strongman BS. Instead of banana republic ‘show of force’ and debate about ‘clash or riot’:
“We recognize we have a massive problem, and here is how we’re going to solve it —
1. emergency mobilization of the legal system
- temporary courts to determine status
- volunteer legal representation (there are enough lawyers who’d line up to defend people’s rights)
2. A structure wherein people here illegally would have firm options:
- a path to some sort of renewable legal status, OR
- a hard framework of wrapping up one’s life here with a reasonable exit to another country
In other words, what the immigration ‘system’ could or should be. Instead, on one hand we have people here illegally, hiding for years, and on the other, right now we have Trump etc cosplaying strongman, whereas before we had corporate malfeasance with corporate a-holes hiring people they know to be ineligible to work, and sucking up the cash differential into their own pockets.
What’s my personal understanding here?\
1. did lots of business with Trump as a contractor/vendor in the 80s and 90s; alls I can say is the guy has always been exactly as you see him; always a big wrong answer to a big serious question
2. ran factories, never hired people who weren’t legal; and sometimes helped people who worked with us, go through the immigration process here, with all the crooked lawyers who do that work (75% of them it felt like)
3. for the last 20 years have been in both construction and agriculture and have watched while corporate interests shove laws around for profitability, and both the political left and right do s*htty things in order to prevail ideologically. It’s ideology over best practices every f*cking time.
- i would say that there’s enough ‘un-American’ / ‘anti-American’ behavior to go around in both these houses and the corporate world as well.
- The gordian knot can be cut, but a military response - it’s the wrong knife.
Hand wishing in 8 million illegals and ushering in people under the guise of humanitarian parole which is for witness testimony and medical procedures. Screw your suggestions and Americans aren’t paying for courts to determine someone doesn’t have a visa to live and work here.
The military response is because people were getting violent with federal workers and local governments sided with the rioter. I imagine the federal government would do the same if we all attacked IRS workers.
I agree it would be better if we handled this with more decorum and organization as you suggest in item 1. My problem is that no politicians with that temperament, experience, and style, have stepped up to enforce immigration law and reverse the dirty pool tactics of the Biden administration.
It just seems like a trick if only one side cares about following the rules. So what do you do if one administration let's in 14 million people and then they say to those who want that reversed- sure, but due process means 14 million trials?
I lived through the Rodney King riots. Was a student at USC and they shut down the school and asked everyone to head to Doheny Library where they shut the big iron doors for the evening. I drove home to the west side with fires blazing everywhere.

This goes without saying but I'll say it anyway...I sure hope not.

It's exciting to live in such momentous times but I wish I were 10 - 20 years younger. At least I have plenty of guns and can go down fighting.
What age would you like to be?
Mid-30s to mid-40s are a good age to be for hard times.
I do think this is the beginning of the end of the age of reason.
I’ve long said that we (U.S. & Europe) will enter a new Dark Age within a century.
It all actually makes just as much sense if you consider that the American founders were just making it up as they went along.
I met a doctor who fled Lebanon in the 1980s. It sounded like it used to be nice.
People are always down on empires but it sure looks like all those people were better off under the Ottoman yoke.
Paramilitaries would have guns.
They have guns they're just not using them yet.
No chaos in Canada at the moment.
Since I live in Canada I consider that I know more about than you. There’s no chaos.
There is a lot going on in the Canadian economy that you might be buffered from. At some point the only growth industries are government and criminal black markets. Maybe your new banker prime minister can turn things around but I doubt it.
Still no details.
So all this smoke blowing over the border is from well-regulated fires?
check under the bed.
i think any of the normal MAGA idiots whining (as they do) don’t grasp what free speech even is, much less the legal details. they’ll rage, feel better and innocent people will be jailed for.. being mad?
I think most people are okay with peaceable assembly and asking for redress of grievances. It's when things turn violent we have a problem.
Or obstructing justice. The guy running backward in front of the SUV was lucky.
Not sure the Mexican flags were a good look either.
I don't dig that but I would never say we have legal authority to do anything about it. It just obviously undercuts their case.
Mexican flags are there to incite and recruit Mexican Americans. We'll see how that plays out.
I heard he died. I didn't see him get up and that conk on the head was no joke.
I saw one from ground level near him, and he did get up. We'd have heard if he collapsed later.
He was trying to recreate a TiananmenSquare moment. Didn’t come across as such except in our illegal loving media.
Turned violent Jan 6. Everybody pardoned. Especially cop beaters. Law and order?
I'd not let cop beaters off like they did in Seattle and Portland. I didn't follow it WRT Jan 6. Which cop beaters? Did they serve any time? I think hitting a cop at a protest deserves jail time but not, for example 20 years.

Who has been arrested and jailed for free speech? I see destruction of property, bricks being thrown at cars, fires being set….
The subject is the current LA riots, not the January 6th demonstrations.
Indeed. Free speech always goes better with gasoline.

Honestly. for people who hate America they sure do pull out all the stops to be here.

Hmm.
Another fiery but mostly peaceful protests.
More left wing violence. May they be crushed Ishallah.
The new Jews. They live like Episcopalians and vote like Puerto Ricans.
On behalf of Jews everywhere may I say-- let us never speak of this again. :)
Trump is considering sending in some of the Marine recruits from Oceanside. This should be good. "Private Joker, time to beat up on some librals."
- a path to some sort of renewable legal status
Not in a million years.
You know what’s inflammatory?
Hand wishing in 8 million illegals and ushering in people under the guise of humanitarian parole which is for witness testimony and medical procedures. Screw your suggestions and Americans aren’t paying for courts to determine someone doesn’t have a visa to live and work here.
Not sure I’d agree with you down the line but love to see a good faith well intended truth teller in the mix.
Steve, it's been said before but I'll repeat it. Access to White people isn't a human right. Deport the browns with extreme prejudice.
It does rather appear, that everyone has the right to choose to live next to white people. Except white people.
