Ok, I happen to know someone who has met Epstein and been to the island.
I have cousin who lived in the USVI and she and her husband ran a contracting business and did some work for Epstein on the island a few different times. Was chatting about this with them when they visited last summer, and her hubby had a *very* negative impression of Epstein. Would tell them what to do without looking them in the eye, was very curt and dismissive--like they did not matter, unimportant people, "the help".
I was not there, but his description sure did not sound like how I interact with service techs or contractors I deal with. I'm not Mr. Geniality, but I tend to be friendly to all the folks I meet. (I guess it's my "boring" "white bread" mayonnaise midwesternness.)
If Epstein really came across to some connected folks as "cool guy" fun to hang out with, then I suspect it was a very tactical, scheming "what can this guy do for me" bonhomie.
Many rich/connected people turn on the charm for people they deem worthy. Sure, it speaks badly of him that he treated his help this way, but he could've been a different guy with the haves. There is certainly a lot of appreciation for his company in the emails.
